Lucky for us, Funk the War 9: Bad Romance is fast approaching! The roving, radical dance party will be kicking off at 3:00 PM on Friday, March 19th, the 7th anniversary of the illegal war in Iraq. Funky dancers should meet at Farragut West park at 3:00, as we’ll likely be on the move by 3:30.

We, the youth, fell head over heels in love with Obama, and now he’s sleeping around with the usual suspects: War contractors, big oil companies, and Israel. We won’t stand for this betrayal of trust, and we’re totally breaking up and ending this bad romance!

For all you high school kids ready to party it up against the military-industrial complex, we know you might not be able to be at Farragut West by 3:30, and that’s why we’re, based on interest, sending a contingent of funky students to a secondary “pick up” location at 4:00 on the day of, so we can roll in strong, and not be scared of the pigs in blue! On Saturday, February 13th, DC Students for a Democratic Society will be hosting a (semi)-national Consulta to discuss ideas, plans, and tactics for the March 19th Funk the War action. Members from other SDS chapters from around the country will be in attendance, as well as several people from non-SDS organizations who wish to be involved in the planning for this crucial event.

District Youth Mobilized will be in attendance at the consulta, and is extending an open invitation to anyone who feels they may be interested in seeing and contributing to the work that goes into an action. If you feel that you wish to attend, please contact Alan Cline or Paul Funkhouser.

Thanks to their aggressive lobbying, the world’s worst CO2 emitters, companies like Shell and Exxon, are free from new international pollution regulations and fixing to reap huge profits from Obama’s expanding resource wars in the strategic oil and natural gas-rich war zones of the Middle East and Central Asia.

The importance of challenging the violence and treachery of corporate power is becoming increasingly clear to the Climate and Anti-War Movements. If we want to turn the tide of climate chaos and corporate resource imperialism, then 2010 must be a year of unprecedented cooperation between our movements in creative resistance against the Fossil Hawks.

With the US military’s ranking as the world’s #1 gas guzzler (oil consumer & user), buying from the top polluting transnationals, the problem runs deep. The annual CO2 output of the Iraq War is greater than 139 (60%) of the world’s countries. It gets worse, but much of the toxic output from the War on Terror is hard to put a number on. We know that US bombs release heavy doses of other greenhouse gases, and pollutants like depleted uranium (DU) are in regular use. There is a long history of US military-industrial eco-devastation: trench warfare gases in WWI, nukes in WWII, agent orange in Vietnam, DU in Gulf War I, and it’ll keep coming ’til we bring them down.”

Netanyahu, a promoter of the continued subjugation of the Palestinian people, is visiting Washington unannounced. This war criminal and his hound, Ehud Barak will be speaking at the United Jewish Communities General Assembly, an orginization that lists the contradictory goals of “social justice and human rights” and “keeping Israel safe, strong, and prosperous”. Barak, after his first stint in the government, conveniently found himself on the payroll of one Electronic Data Systems, now known as HP Enterprise Services. It should be no surprise that some of HPES’ biggest clients are General Motors, Shell, The UK Ministry of Defense, and the US Navy.

As Prime Minister of Israel, Netanyahu has previously been strongly opposed to a two state solution, championing increased military presence at the expense of the palestinians. In a recent speech, Netanyahu decided he might, possibly, someday, MAYBE CONSIDER a two state solution, as long as the Palestinians were willing to succumb to hateful and oppressive terms. He continues to disregard binding international agreements concerning Israeli settlement, and has no qualms against the continued genocide of non Israelis in his so called holy land.

We, as part of the District Youth Mobilized collective, have a unique oppurtunity to tell this lying, thieving, murdering fascist what we think of him and his policies of subjugation and genocide. On November 8th, we will be sending a contingent to the hotel at which his psuedo-zionist event is to be held, and we will make him face his crimes against not only the Palestinians, but the Arab and global communities as well.

Why funk the war? Americans were tricked into supporting GWB’s 2001 invasion.. the “war on terror” has yielded little progress and has perpetuated violence and anti-imperialist sentiments in Afghanistan, Iraq, and every other part of the world that has been on the wrong side of globalization. Even though the election of Barack Obama was interpreted by most of us peace activists as a public rejection of US foreign wars of aggression and neoconservative foreign policy, THE OCCUPATION ENDURES! now Obama weighs sending THOUSANDS MORE American troops to put down insurrection in Afghanistan that foreign presence cultivated…His military advisors want a “surge”, “escalation”, or whatever you call an expansion of the American military presence abroad. For the conscious citizenry, the time for passive resistence has long passed.  Take back our streets and our  armies FUNK THE WAR!

On the evening of June 12, both parties had claimed victory for their own sides, with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme spiritual leader declaring Ahmadinejad the victor, with over 62% of the vote. Immediately, scrutiny was heaped on this result. Several interesting demographic details appeared under closer examination. Mousavi, who had been extremely well represented in both urban centers and his home province of Azerbaijan, allegedly lost the city of Tabriz, the capital of Azerbaijan, with Ahmadinejad carrying 57% of that vote. This phenomenon is akin to if Barrack Obama had lost the city of Chicago, and simply makes no sense. Another candidate in the race, Mohsen Rezaie, had done very poorly prior to the election. Somehow, this virtually non-existent candidate won 670,000 votes. An acceptable anomaly, had it not been that another reform candidate, Mehdi Karoubi, received less than half of that total, even losing his home province of Lur. In Iran, a country that has traditionally voted with a strong emphasis on ethnicity, these results are indeed, very suspect.

Another anomaly in the electoral process is the discrepancy between what is supposed to happen, and what did happen. In Iranian elections, the Electoral Commission is supposed to wait three days, allow all grievances to be addressed, and then hand off the results to Ayatollah Khamenei to be made official. None of these things happened in the 2009 election, with the first “official” result coming from Ahmadinejad’s Interior Ministry over Iran’s state-owned TV station (It is currently law that all television networks are state owned in Iran, something Mousavi wished to change should he be elected).

Naturally, many Mousavi supporters were devastated by these results. Beginning mid-morning on Saturday June 13th, tens of thousands took to the streets, starting in Tehran, Iran’s capital, and spreading throughout the country. Riot police were summoned to control demonstrators, and the situation deteriorated from there. Throughout the day, Iran was systematically cut off from the outside world as phone lines were taken down, followed by cellular phone service, text messaging, and the internet. Foreign journalists were expelled from the country, with several crews having their cameras and film confiscated, even being arrested. A virtual police state was enacted, and soon, violent riots were widespread.

Despite being cut off from the world, news continued to come in through an unlikely source: Twitter. Using proxies and third party applications, several men and women on the ground were able to keep the stream of information flowing throughout the day, 144 characters at a time. It is through these twitter users that reports first surfaced of the abduction and arrest of Mr. Mousavi, and several other high-ranking members of the Iranian community, including former presidents Mohammad Khatami and Akbar Hashemi Rafsjani. Latest reports were coming in that, at 5:30 AM Tehran time, the streets were still flooded with people chanting “Mousavi, Mousavi”, “Death to the Dictator”, and “Our God is Mighty”.

The battles continue to rage on the streets as police have been reported going door to door, confiscating any devices that may be used to communicate outside of the country. Full scale revolution may not be far off, and protesters around the world are getting ready to show their support for a fair and transparent democracy. One Iranian source has been quoted as saying “It hardly matters who wins anymore, we will not be treated like this”.
